How do I create an SEO Optimized title for my eBay listing?

One of the key eBay search ranking factors is having SEO optimized titles. For that reason, creating a title with relevant keywords will help you to appeal to eBay's search engine and let your eBay listings rank higher in the search results.

We do this in 4 easy steps which we detail in this video.

Here they are below for your convenience:

  1. Pick the right "eBay Keywords" for your listing You will often find that the best keywords for eBay titles (which you can spy on by looking at top performing listings for your chosen product) often don't fit into the sentence in a clearly constructed phrase. For example, in the video we look at a listing with the title "Quotient 13x20 Carport Outdoor Car Shelter Storage Garage Canopy Tent Heavy Duty" That clearly isn't a phrase that someone would type into any search engine in and of itself, however when you break it down with "eBay SEO" in mind, we see that in fact, a lot of these individual phrases are actually popular keywords or "searched keywords" that real users are typing into the search engine. In our example, we hone in on the keyword "Outdoor car shelter" and analyze that further with the ZIK title builder tool. This tool allows us to perform fast keywords research to gain granular detail about the most popular keywords related to our seed phrase. It gives us information such as: How many times the phrase was searched
  2. How much competition there was for that phrase and
  3. How many sales were a result of a listing having that phrase in the title.
  4. Analyze Competitors product titles Next, we look at our top competitors' eBay listings to see what we can learn from their eBay item titles. We simply copy the entire product title, and paste it into the eBay title builder too and we will be given even more keyword choices.
  5. Construct the perfect title Armed with all the detailed data from your competitors best titles, you can now go about constructing the best eBay title for your listing. Do this by removing the unrelated keywords from your competitors listing from your title, and adding in any relevant, long tail keywords that fit with your product. If you find that you don't have room to fit in long trail keywords, you can also find keywords that are more generic, and have high traffic and conversions to add to the listing.

How long should an eBay title be?

eBay has an 80 character limit on their titles. This is why it is so important to choose keywords that maximize the use of these 80 characters. Using an eBay keyword tool such as our title builder arms you with the information to take full advantage of this limit.

What should NOT be included in your title?

Aside from obvious things such as avoiding using adult terms or using VeRo related keywords (We shouldn't be listing VeRo items at all!), there are other more specific "no-nos" to consider when building an eBay title such as:

  • Don't include a brand name, if the product is unbranded/unknown.
  • Don't include excessive punctuation.
  • Don't forget to include the brand, if the product is a popular brand and isn't a VeRo item.

Overall, we want to make sure that we keep it concise, clear, and focused on high traffic keywords that attribute to more eBay sales. In doing this we also want to make sure to choose keywords which are relevant to key product details to grab your buyer's attention.

Does the order of the keywords matter when building eBay titles?

Yes, absolutely! The order of keywords does matter in eBay titles.

Place important keywords at the beginning for better visibility and relevancy. Organize them logically to attract the right audience and improve search rankings. Bear in mind that the bot that reads your title to analyze how your title satisfies the eBay Cassini algorithm (see our detailed guide on eBay search engine optimization to find out more) reads your content from left to right, just as we do. A heavier weight is placed to the keywords at the start of your title, because that is what we read first.

To take full advantage of this, make sure that you have the most relevant, and high traffic keywords and phrases at the front of your title to give it a higher weight for when the algorithm analyzes your title to find out where your eBay listing should sit in the results.

Look through all of the listings on your eBay store, and run the ones that are not performing well (the ones that don't have traffic or don't rank high) through our title builder today. Make sure you prioritize your important keywords at the front of the title (based on data provided by our title builder) and review how your listing performs over the next 30 days. Keep doing this process for all your listings until you don't see incremental increases from changes.

At this point, you can be sure that your title is optimized very well, and will outperform other eBay sellers for this specific ranking factor.
