The U.S. clothing market in context
How the whole U.S. clothing market is trending, from official U.S. Census data, and what it means for your eBay sourcing. These are national retail figures, not eBay.
What this means for sellers
U.S. clothing and clothing accessories stores took a record $28.3B in July 2026, up 5.0% on the same month last year and up from $20.1B in January 2021, so the retail demand sitting behind dresses is still growing rather than fading.
U.S. online sales reached $330B in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.4% year on year and about 3 times their 2018 level, after a $365B peak in the fourth quarter of 2025, so more of that clothing spend keeps moving to resale channels like eBay.
On eBay dresses is crowded rather than slow: an estimated 90,102 items sold in 30 days against 652,845 live listings, a 13.8% sell-through, worth about $3.4 million at $37.73 a sale. Two scope notes belong here. This page covers dresses only, and the wider apparel view, t-shirts, jackets, hoodies and the rest, is the clothes report, with jeans on its own page. And eBay's dress keyword also catches dress shirts, dress socks, dress belts and dress shoes, which is why ten of the twelve rows in the product table below are menswear or accessories. The style table is the clean read.
The top ten sellers take 24.7% of category revenue and 16.5% of its units from 1.5% of the live listings, and they are running three different models. bullseye_deals sold 5,420 items at about $17 each from only 1,464 listings, which is multi-quantity volume. truehabit turned 1,961 sales into $320,176, about $163 apiece. designeroutlet and ModemaniOutlet sell almost nothing by comparison, 140 and 60 items, and still book $63,073 and $30,324. On the thin end of this category that matters: the whole cocktail style is $31,308 for the month, so one seller's 30 days can be the size of an entire segment. Read the small numbers as small numbers.

Best Selling Dresses on eBay FAQs
It can be, but this is a selection problem more than a volume problem. An estimated 90,102 dresses sold in the last 30 days for about $3.4 million, an average of $37.73 a sale, and 652,845 live listings sit behind that number, a 13.8% sell-through. Only three of the eight tracked styles beat that rate: midi at 17.3%, wedding at 15.8% and maxi at 15.6%. Cocktail moved 695 units against 10,541 listings for 6.6%, so the same category holds a style that clears about one listing in six and one that clears about one in fifteen. Profit comes from picking the style you can win, not the style with the most sales.
Midi clears quickest in this window at 17.3%, then wedding at 15.8% and maxi at 15.6%. Those are the only three styles that beat the 13.8% category rate. Cocktail is slowest of the eight tracked styles at 6.6%, with summer at 10.7% and bodycon at 10.8% just above it. Compare those figures against each other rather than against the category rate, because the style buckets are keyword matches and cover 34,027 of the 90,102 units, about 38% of the category. On that basis the mid and long lengths are the fast group. Floral is the exception that proves the point: 7,161 units, almost the biggest style here, clearing at only 11.1%.
Compare buyer demand against active listings in ZIK product research instead of guessing from what looks popular. In this window cocktail and bodycon carry the thinnest listing pools of the tracked styles, 10,541 and 14,893, and they are the only two scored Low competition. Only one of them converts: bodycon clears 10.8% against cocktail's 6.6%. Thin competition on its own is not an opening. The search terms say the same thing from the other side. Plus size dress, cocktail dress and wedding guest dress are the three Low competition terms, at $27.13, $45.05 and $36.25 a sale. Start from a shallow listing pool where clearance still holds, then narrow by length, size and color.
The category average is $37.73, calculated as revenue divided by units. By style, maxi leads at $50.11 and midi follows at $47.19, while summer and bodycon sit at the bottom near $25.23 and $25.92. The more useful number is the gap between what sellers ask and what buyers pay. Wedding listings average $116.45 as an asking price while wedding dresses sell for $39.46, a factor of 2.95, so the expensive gowns are not the part of that pool that moves. Cocktail asks $71.49 and realises $45.05. Maxi is the tightest gap on the page, $58.69 against $50.11. Price to the part of the style that actually clears, not to the listing pool.
ZIK ranks styles from sold-listing data, weighing units sold, sell-through and competition together rather than raw volume. That is why floral, second by units at 7,161, scores Low opportunity: it carries 64,417 live listings, the deepest pool of the eight, for an 11.1% clear rate. Midi sells 7,140 against 41,271 listings at 17.3% and scores High. Bodycon scores High on just 1,601 units, because 14,893 listings is a shallow field to enter. The same method drives every table on this page. The one limitation we publish rather than hide is that the style buckets are keyword matches, not a clean split of the category: they cover 34,027 of 90,102 units, so they read best against each other.
Both work, and your sourcing decides which. New listings run at scale and suit the everyday lengths: maxi, midi and mini carry 20,048 of the 34,027 units the tracked styles record, close to six in ten. Pre-owned and vintage hold their margin where condition is part of the appeal and the listing pool is thinner. The seller board shows both models running side by side. bullseye_deals moved 5,420 units at about $17 each from only 1,464 listings, which is multi-quantity stock. truehabit turned 1,961 sales into $320,176, roughly $163 apiece. designeroutlet took $63,073 from 140 sales on 141 listings, about $450 each, which is one in and one out. Pick the model before the stock.
Length, rather than occasion. Maxi and midi take the top two spots on average sold price at $50.11 and $47.19, two of the three fastest clear rates at 15.6% and 17.3%, and the two best revenue-per-listing figures at $7.84 and $8.16 against $5.21 for the category. Wedding is the one occasion style that keeps up, 15.8% sell-through and $6.22 per listing, but it asks $116.45 to realise $39.46. Cocktail is the style to be careful with: the second highest asking price at $71.49 and the slowest clearance on this page at 6.6%. Whatever you source, name the length, size and color in the title, because those are the words buyers type.
Because eBay's dress keyword also catches dress shirts, dress socks, dress belts and dress shoes, and in this window those outsell actual dresses in the product table. Ten of the twelve highest-volume listings are menswear or accessories: a $34.95 banded-collar dress shirt, three-packs of wool dress socks at $21.99, four leather dress belts between $10.95 and $12.98, two pairs of oxford dress shoes, a satin tuxedo vest set and a lingerie babydoll. Only two rows are genuine dresses, both adidas jersey styles at $15.00 and $14.00, so real dresses are 350 of the table's 2,264 units. The bleed reaches the subcategory column too: that tuxedo vest is filed under Wedding. Source from the style and search-term tables on this page instead.
