The U.S. hobby and game retail market in context
How the U.S. hobby and game retail market is trending, from official U.S. Census data, and what it means for your eBay video game sourcing. These are national retail figures, not eBay.
What this means for sellers
U.S. sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book store sales ran at $8.94B in July 2026, up 10.1% on July 2025 and within $4M of the series high set the month before. The line has climbed steadily for a year, from $8.11B last July to $8.89B in April. There is no video-game-only retail series, so this is the honest proxy: NAICS 451 is the group that contains game and hobby retail. New releases at retail are what push last-generation discs and cartridges into the second-hand market, which is the stock this page is about.
U.S. online sales reached $330B in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.4% year on year and about 3 times their 2018 level, with the Q4 2025 holiday quarter peaking at $365B. Video games suit that shift, because a title, a platform and a condition describe a game precisely enough to buy it without handling it.
On eBay, ZIK tracked an estimated 39,046 video games and consoles sold in the last 30 days, worth $1,532,444 against 265,234 live listings, a 14.7% sell-through at $39.25 a sale, with competition scoring High. That is the lowest sell-through and the most crowded field of any electronics page on this hub. Concentration, though, is milder here than in phones or tablets: ten sellers took 50.9% of the units and 46.0% of the revenue from 2,387 listings, and the largest, vipoutlet, moved 7,962 units. Strip those ten out and everyone else clears 7.3%. There is more room for an individual seller here than the other electronics pages, but you are competing against a quarter of a million live listings.
Condition and franchise beat platform here. Pokemon titles clear 68.4% of their 2,148 live listings, the fastest on the page by a wide margin, at $66.73 a sale, and they are the only segment scoring Low competition with High opportunity. Sealed stock of any platform clears 31.3% and Switch 26.2%, both scoring High opportunity. The platform-wide pools are the trap: PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox carry 63,253, 62,978 and 42,672 listings and clear 16.4%, 13.9% and 15.7%, all scoring Low opportunity. Game Boy and Sega look quiet at 2,773 and 7,371 listings but turn slowest of all, at 7.7% and 10.3%, so quiet is not the same as winnable. Watch the asking column too: PlayStation listings ask a mean $155.29 and realise $41.16, a factor of 3.8.

Best Selling Video Games on eBay FAQs
It is a volume business rather than a margin one. ZIK tracked 39,046 games and consoles sold in 30 days for $1,532,444, a 14.7% sell-through against 265,234 live listings at $39.25 a sale, with competition scoring High. That is the lowest sell-through and the most crowded field of the electronics pages on this hub. Concentration is milder than in phones or tablets, with the top ten sellers taking 46.0% of revenue, so there is more room for individual sellers here, but you are competing against a quarter of a million live listings.
Sealed stock and Pokemon titles, clearly. The Pokemon segment cleared 1,470 units against only 2,148 listings, a 68.4% sell-through, the fastest on the page by a wide margin and the only segment scoring Low competition with High opportunity. Sealed listings of any platform cleared 9,760 units at 31.3%. By platform, Nintendo Switch turned over at 26.2% against PlayStation's 16.4%, Xbox's 15.7% and Nintendo's 13.9% overall.
Avoid the platform-wide pools and go at condition and franchise instead. PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox all score High competition here, with 63,253, 62,978 and 42,672 live listings respectively, and all three score Low opportunity. The gaps are Pokemon at Low competition and High opportunity, and Switch and Sealed at Medium competition with High opportunity. Game Boy and Sega look quiet at 2,773 and 7,371 listings but turn slowly, at 7.7% and 10.3%, so quiet is not the same as winnable.
The category average sold price is $39.25, the lowest of any electronics page on this hub. Game Boy stock carries the highest average at $75.25 and Pokemon titles $66.73, both reflecting collector demand for older cartridges. Current-generation platforms sit lower: Nintendo at $50.53, PlayStation $41.16, Switch $38.17, Sealed $37.11, Sega $34.42 and Xbox at $29.53. Shipping economics matter more at this price point than in any other category on the hub.
ZIK ranks from sold-listing data rather than listing counts, weighing units sold, sell-through and competition together. That is why PlayStation leads this page on raw units at 10,365 but scores Low opportunity, while Pokemon sits at 1,470 units and scores High: one is crowded, the other clears. Every figure comes from a trailing 30-day window of eBay US sold listings and is dated on the page.
State completeness first, because it is the main price variable here. Buyers distinguish sealed, complete in box, and cartridge or disc only, and those are effectively three different products at three different prices. The sealed segment on this page clears at more than twice the rate of the platform pools, so if stock is genuinely sealed, say so in the title. For discs, note resurfacing and scratches; for cartridges, confirm the save battery works on titles that use one.
Older physical stock and collector editions outprice current releases. Game Boy cartridges average $75.25 a sale and Pokemon titles $66.73, against $29.53 for Xbox. Sealed and factory-sealed listings appear repeatedly among the top sellers, including Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon on 3DS. Game of the Year and special editions also surface at the top, with Bloodborne: Game Of The Year Edition among the fastest movers this window.
