The U.S. clothing and accessories market in context
How the whole U.S. clothing and accessories market is trending, from official U.S. Census data, and what it means for your eBay sourcing. These are national retail figures, not eBay.
What this means for sellers
U.S. clothing and clothing accessories store sales set a record $28.3B in July 2026, up 5.0% on July 2025 and the highest month in the series, so the spending pool that neckwear sits inside is still growing. Ties ride inside that number rather than moving with it. Neckwear is an occasion purchase, bought for a wedding, a prom or a new job, so it tracks events more closely than it tracks the apparel cycle.
U.S. online sales reached $330B in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.4% year on year and about 3 times their 2018 level, with the Q4 2025 holiday quarter peaking at $365B. Accessories feel that fourth-quarter swing harder than most categories do, because a tie is a gift as often as it is a purchase, so plan stock for the run into the holidays rather than for a flat year.
On eBay an estimated 23,500 ties sold in 30 days for $606,346 against 191,692 live listings, a 12.3% sell-through and roughly 8.2 listings live for every monthly sale. ZIK rates category competition High. One warning before you use the tables: the eBay tie keyword also catches tie-dye, side-tie and no-tie, and six of the twelve rows in the product table are not neckwear at all. They are three Alo Yoga tie-dye tote bags, a pair of Slumbies tie-dye slipper socks, a side-tie midi dress and a pack of no-tie shoelaces. Those six carry 831 of the table's 1,657 units, and the single biggest row in the table is a tote bag. Nothing is filtered out here, it is labelled, so read the product table as a keyword warning and source from the style segments and search terms instead.
Wedding is the only style doing anything different. It clears 38.6% against a 12.3% category rate and returns $7.08 of revenue per live listing, where the category returns $3.16 and no other style beats $3.43. Everything else is flat: six of the eight styles sit inside 3.7 points of each other, from floral at 9.5% to striped at 13.2%, with skinny at 18.4% the only one between. Silk is the biggest pool and the biggest revenue share, 39,527 listings and 25.3% of category revenue, but it clears 10.6%. Size and speed are not the same thing here. This is also a small page, so single listings move whole segments: besttuxedo7 sold 787 units from 34 live listings and oveli-0 sold 421 from just 2, multi-quantity formal stock rather than one-off sourcing, and besttuxedo7's 787 alone is equal to 46% of the entire wedding segment's 1,706 sales.

Best Selling Ties on eBay FAQs
It can be, but this is a thin category and the page will not pretend otherwise. An estimated 23,500 ties sold in the last 30 days for about $606,346, against 191,692 live listings. That is a 12.3% sell-through, or roughly 8.2 listings sitting live for every sale made in a month, and ZIK rates category competition High. The average sale is $25.80, calculated as revenue divided by units, so a single unit rarely carries much margin once fees and shipping come out. Profit here comes from one narrow niche and from repeat volume, not from the category as a whole. Wedding is the one style where a thin listing pool and real clearance line up.
Wedding clears fastest in the current ZIK window at 38.6%, and nothing else is close. Skinny is second at 18.4% and striped third at 13.2%. Below those, six of the eight styles fit inside a 3.7 point band, from floral at 9.5% up to striped at 13.2%, so outside the wedding niche the choice of style barely changes how fast stock turns. What makes wedding work is the pairing: 1,706 sales against only 4,414 live listings, about 2.6 listings for every monthly sale where the category as a whole carries 8.2. It is also the second cheapest style at $18.32, so it clears on price as much as on demand.
Compare buyer demand against active listings in ZIK product research rather than assuming a thin pool is an opening. Designer and knit carry the fewest listings here, 1,824 and 3,248, and are the only two styles rated Low competition, but they clear 10.1% and 11.0%, both below the 12.5% the eight tracked styles manage as a group. Wedding is the one style where a light pool and real clearance line up: 4,414 listings at 38.6%, returning $7.08 of revenue per live listing against $3.16 for the category. Thin competition on a slow style is just a small slow pool. Check yield per listing before you check listing count.
The category average sold price is $25.80, calculated as revenue divided by units. By style, silk leads at $36.57 with designer close behind at $33.49, while skinny sits lowest at $17.61 and wedding at $18.32, a range of about 2.1 times end to end. Asking prices are a poor guide here. Live skinny listings average $61.34 while skinny ties actually sell for $17.61, the widest gap between asking and clearing on the page, which suggests the expensive end of that pool is sitting rather than moving. Only striped and designer clear above their own asking prices, $25.92 against $25.48 and $33.49 against $29.01, and both sit on small pools.
ZIK ranks styles from sold-listing data, weighing units sold, sell-through and competition together rather than raw volume. Silk shows why that matters this window. It leads the tracked styles on units at 4,199 and takes 25.3% of category revenue, but it also carries 39,527 live listings, 20.6% of every listing on the page and more than twice the next style, so it clears 10.6% and scores Low opportunity. Volume and opportunity are not the same signal, and the tables here separate them. One scope note: the eight styles are keyword tags, not a partition. They cover 10,984 of the 23,500 units and 87,869 of the 191,692 listings, so read them against each other rather than as a total.
Both appear on the September seller board, and the two ends of it run opposite models. besttuxedo7 recorded 787 sales from 34 live listings and oveli-0 recorded 421 from just 2, which is multi-quantity new formal stock rather than one-off sourcing, at $25.36 and $23.89 a sale. At the other end sits the used, vintage and designer consignment trade: RELMOS turned 48 sales into $15,426, about $321 a piece, and c-suiteattire averaged $161.52 across 81 sales, against a $25.80 category average. Far higher price per unit, far lower turnover. Neither model is wrong, but they need different capital. The volume model needs one good multi-quantity listing; the consignment model needs sourcing that beats the category average many times over.
Brand is not the useful axis in this category, and the September data makes that plain. The designer style clears 10.1%, slower than striped, bow and knit, on the smallest listing pool of the eight at 1,824, and at $33.49 it sells for less than plain silk at $36.57. The product table shows only one repeat necktie name, Vesuvio Napoli on two rows, both at $12.95, while four of the twelve rows are unbranded tuxedo vest, tie and hankie sets at $24.89 to $25.50. The other brand names in that table, Alo and Slumbies, are not neckwear at all. Lead your titles with fabric, color, width and occasion, and keep brand-led listings for the pieces where a label genuinely lifts the price.
Because eBay's tie keyword also catches tie-dye, side-tie and no-tie, and this window the non-neckwear rows outsell the real ones at the top of the table. Six of the twelve highest-volume rows are not ties: three Alo Yoga canvas tote bags, a pair of Slumbies slipper socks, a side-tie midi dress and a pack of no-tie shoelaces. Those six hold 831 of the table's 1,657 units, and the biggest row on units and revenue is a tote bag at 305 sales and $7,622, ahead of any necktie here. Of the six genuine rows, two are standalone neckties and four are tuxedo sets. Nothing is filtered out, it is labelled. Source from the style segments and search terms, which are all genuine neckwear.
